The hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for children greater than 2 years of age in geographic areas where the average annual incidence of hepatitis A was 20 cases per 100,000 population or higher during 1987 1997.

Persons traveling or working in geographic areas with high or intermediate risk of hepatitis A should be vaccinated. Even though vaccinated persons are protected 4 weeks after receiving the first dose they need to return for a second dose 6 to 12 months later for long-term protection. The vaccination is not approved for children less than 2 years of age. These children should receive immune globulin (Ig) prior to travel to high-risk areas.
