Department Of Health Media Update H1N1 Swine Flu (6/24/2009)
 A second laboratory confirmed H1N1 Swine Flu death has been confirmed in that of a 30-year-old female in Seminole County. Florida's first confirmed death in mid June was a 9-year-old Miami-Dade County resident. While most cases of H1N1 Swine Flu are mild, there are exceptions. Pre-existing health condition often play a role in how individuals react to the flu.

Hepatitis Can Damage Liver Without Symptoms (5/15/2009)
In Florida, an estimated 300,000 individuals are infected with chronic hepatitis C. Most of them do not know because they have no symptoms. Floridians may not even be aware of factors that put them at risk, such as a blood transfusion before 1992, sharing a needle to inject drugs (even one time 30 years ago), or long-term kidney dialysis. The Florida Department of Health (DOH) encourages individuals to get tested to learn their status.

Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring bacteria in the warm waters of the Gulf coast, particularly during the summer months.

National High Blood Pressure Education Month (5/6/2009)
The Volusia County Health Department, Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and
Wellness joins the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute in recognizing May as National High Blood Pressure Education Month.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is estimated that 1 of 3 American adults has high blood pressure or hypertension. In Volusia County, 30 percent of adults were diagnosed with high blood pressure in 2007 according to the Florida Community Health Assessment Resource Tool Set.

Florida Department of Health Media Update - Swine Flu (4/30/2009)
Currently there are no confirmed cases of swine influenza in Florida. The Department of Health continues enhanced surveillance and outreach to physicians, hospitals and other health care professionals. The surveillance system, consisting of sentinel physicians reporting influenza activity, DOH laboratories receiving specimens from physicians and hospitals and our ability to monitor emergency room cases and over- the-counter drug sales is fully operational. We have activated our response plan and are ready to respond to any cases of swine flu if it should occur.

The Florida Department of Health today identified a single case of Salmonella Typhimuirium in a resident of Bradford County. The sample from this resident matched the DNA fingerprint of the nationwide peanut outbreak. The patient was briefly hospitalized, but has since been discharged.
